A few years ago, I wrote a book, ODDITUDE (Finding the Passion for Who You Are and What You Do), which was published by HCI.  The premise of the book is that we are all born “odd” but, as we grow older, the forces of society turn us into ”even.”  We dull what makes us special.    Another premise of ODDITUDE is that everyone around each of us is leading a life that is teaching us something if only we have an open mind and are willing to learn.  ODDITUDE is a short book with short pieces.

The vast majority of people who have read ODDITUDE have really enjoyed it.   Unfortunately, not nearly enough people have read it.  For the next three Fridays, this one included, I am going to publish chapters from ODDITUDE.  I hope that you both read and enjoy them.  But, most importantly, I want to know what you think.  My email is johnpowerspmi@aol.com  Many thanks.

…You are special. Well, you started out that way. We all did. Of the approximately four hundred million sperm who began the journey, the only survivor was the one who created you. To put it another way, if your creation had been a lottery, and you combined the populations of the United States, Canada and Mexico, you would have been the only winner.

Each of us began life as once-in-a-universe happenings…totally unique…ODD.

But then the vast majority of us allowed our families, school, friends, the people we worked with, the people we played with, to dull the sharp edges of our spirits until we were all “Even.”

As my grandfather once said, “ODD is when you are true to yourself. “Even” is when you are “true” to the wishes of others at the expense of yourself. And it is an expense because if you are not being yourself, how can you fully enjoy the journey of living? How can you be happy? How can you discover the true passion of your life – the reason you were put on this planet? How can you really love who you are and love what you do if you are not living as the real You?

Are you succeeding at indifference?

Is your life overflowing with fun or frustration?

Are you bubbling or bored?

When you wake up in the morning, can you hardly wait to get started? Or can you hardly wait to be finished?

Is your day a string of glittering beads or an endless chain of sullen desperation?

At night, do you fall asleep with the joyous exhaustion that comes from doing what you love? Or is your soul filled with the restless spirit of a monotonous existence because you are doing what others expect of you rather than what you want to do?

Keep in mind that those who thrive on recognition from others don’t recognize much in themselves.

If you want to begin living your life, your way, right now, ODDITUDE is for you.
